Outreach and Education during Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2018

SATC was active at events recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2018, expanding our outreach and collaborations with community partners to spread a message of [respect]™ and creating a culture that prevents and appropriately responds to sexual violence. Highlights included:

• A showcase presentation of SATC and Honolulu Theater for Youth’s “Expect [respect]™” on April 5.  “Expect [respect]™” is a 45-minute theatrical performance about sexual violence prevention created for middle school-aged students, made up of short vignettes that focus on the importance of respecting boundaries and empowering students to create a safer community.
   
• Participation in the Waianae Keiki Spring Fest, where our staff interacted directly with the families of students receiving SATC’s sexual violence prevention education curricula in the Nanakuli-Waianae school complex, one of the priority regions that are a focus of our current Hawai‘i State Department of Health-funded project.
   
• Collaborated with O‘ahu colleges to deliver prevention education and awareness programs, like Hawai‘i Pacific University’s “It Starts with Us” resource fair that focused on engaging men in the fight against sexual violence, and the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa’s “Respect Walk” where students and faculty were invited to participate in a tour of campus while dialoguing about how to create a safe, respectful learning environment.

SATC further joined with the Hawai‘i Coalition Against Sexual Assault to run over 600 minute-long radio spots that promoted our online Start the Conversation Toolkit, a resource for parents to talk with their teens and pre-teens about healthy relationships, and engaged in a successful digital media campaign directing community members to SATC’s website.
